From BRAVO's "The Real Moms of Orange County" to MTV's "Laguna Beach"; Orange County moms have endured the stereotype of being the Three S's: spoiled, superficial, and significantly augmented.
Wife and mother, Bunmi Zalob, may live in the OC, but she'll take a conference calls and Excel spreadsheets over marathon shopping any day.
Zalob, an entrepreneur since the age of 17, created BusinessMom.net in February of 2007. It was designed to be a social networking website for business-oriented parents.
"I was a business owner myself and couldn't find a site that brought like-minded moms together in the same way that Facebook and MySpace did. So I started my own."
Only six months later, BusinessMom.net is an intimate network of 400+ mom business owners and has generated media buzz to boot. The women support, encourage, and patron one another's services.
On August 22nd, 2007, Zalob placed the site for sale using the popular auction medium, eBay. In less than 24 hours, the website had started a bidding frenzy between moms with the desire to be the next "Tom" from MySpace.
MySpace, the brainchild of Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, sold for $ 580 million in 2005.
"I've been getting emails from businesses as well as individuals asking me to pull the auction and make a deal on the side. For right now, I want the process to be organic," said Zalob.
The mom demographic has been increasingly targeted by corporations in the past few years. Disney has launched and acquired a slew of social networking sites for the purpose of keeping an eye on their most dear consumer market.
BusinessMom.net's strong reputation has only added to its equity. INC Magazine referenced the website as the "MySpace" for entrepreneur mothers. The network has been mentioned in Simply Home Magazine, Entrepreneur's website for Women, and is a fixture in the blogosphere.
In 2006, a similar website, Mom-Co.com sold for over $ 33,000 leading many to wonder how BusinessMom.net will fare.
When asked if she was nervous about the sale, Zalob expressed no pre-transaction jitters.
"I'm going on vacation in a few days. Life is good."
